Scrambling Up The Round Tops, Set No.1--two Confederate figures standing on rocks
The wooded, rocky hills of the Big and Little Round Tops anchored the left flank of the Union line during the battle of Gettysburg. On the second day of battle, Confederate forces began their assault on the smaller of the two hills. Men from Alabama and Texas were ordered to take the lightly defended high ground. Men from Michigan, New York, Pennsylvania, and Maine were ordered to hold it. Approaching the Blue line on the crest of the hill, the Confederates were thrown back by the first Union volley. They were staggered, but they did not stop. T he desperate fighting lasted until nightfall, but the Federals retained the field.
