Marcus Ulpius Traianus (29 CE - 98 CE)

Soldier, Statesman, Roman Patriarch, and father of an emperor, Traianus was born in the Roman Province of Hispania Baetica (Spain).  Traianus was a successful senator, consul, and governor of Asia and Syria.  His military career included service with General Corbulo in Armenia, followed by fighting in the Jewish Wars under Vespasian, where he became Commander of the 10th Legion Frentensis.

While information in this period is fragmentary, Traianus is known to have been governor of Cappadocia--Galatia (70/71 CE).  He then served as governor of Syria (73/74 CE) followed by a term as proconsul of Roman Asia (79/80 CE).  Traianus lived out his final years in honor and distinction, passing away in 98 CE--the year his son Trajanus became emperor.
