Federal Captain Richard S. Dillon, 24th Michigan Company A, 1863
Richard S. Dillon was born in New York around 1830. By 1862, he was working in an iron factory near Detroit. Commissioned July 1862 as a First Lieutenant, Richard S. Dillon helped recruit and organize Company A. He and his company were mustered into Federal service in August of 1862 with the 24th Michigan Volunteer Infantry. Dillon was promoted to Captain in June of 1863, and was wounded four times during the Battle of Gettysburg. In his official report, Colonel Morrow said, “Captain Dillon commanded his company with great skill and behaved very handsomely.” Dillon made a remarkable recovery and returned to duty with the regiment 30 August 1863. Dillon would continue with the Army of the Potomac until the end of the war.
