When the first Europeans arrived in America, they observed that many of the tribes they encountered practiced scalping enemy warriors. An English captive, Thomas Gist, the son of the famous Christopher Gist, wrote in a journal on September 14th, 1758, that his captors, scalped everyone who was dead, without exception. As they arrived to the village they cleaned and dried the scalps and then hung them on poles.
