USN Lt. Commander Gerald R. Ford, 1945

Gerald R. Ford, the 38th U.S. president, served with distinction in the Navy during World War II.  He enlisted in the Naval Reserve in April 1942, receiving a commission as ensign.  After training, he was assigned to the light aircraft carrier USS Monterey in 1943, serving as assistant navigator, athletic director, and anti-aircraft battery officer.  The ship saw action across the Pacific, including operations in the Gilbert and Marshall Islands, the Marianas, and the Philippines.  In December 1944, Ford nearly lost his life during Typhoon Cobra when he was almost swept overboard.  He earned numerous battle stars before his release from active duty in 1946, leaving the service as a lieutenant commander.
