U.S.Marine Standing Firing Trench Shot Gun, Belleau Wood, 1918918

In June 1918, the United States Marine Corps earned one of its most legendary battle honors in the forests of Belleau Wood, France.  As German forces threatened Paris during a major Spring Offensive, the Marines of the 4th Brigade were ordered to hold the line...and then attack.

Facing entrenched German machine guns, barbed wire, and poison gas, the Marines launched wave after wave of ferocious assaults across open wheat fields.  Their tenacity and aggression stunned the Germans, who reportedly nicknamed them Teufelhunden--Devil Dogs--a name the Corps proudly carries to this day.

After 26 days of brutal fighting, the Marines cleared the wood.  The battle cost nearly 5,000 casualties, but announced America's fighting power to the world.
