Rif Cavalry Shooting Sidewards--single figure (green and black striped djellaba) mounted on running horse

Rif Warriors

The "Rif Warriors" were the Berber tribesmen who fought against the colonial powers in Morocco.  They were known for their fierce fighting skills, marksmanship, and ability to move undetected in the difficult mountain terrain.  The Rifian forces consisted mainly of tribal militia who wore ordinary clothes (often djellabas) rather than uniforms.  On the head was worn a small cap or turban, the style of the latter varying between the tribes.

Rif/Berber Tribal Cavalry
The Rif/Berber indigenous forces did not maintain formal cavalry units.  However, they did use fast, highly mobile irregular bands (such as those led by local leaders like Ahmed al-Raisuni) that used terrain knowledge to execute swift hit-and-run attacks against colonial forces.
