German Sturmtruppen Advancing, No.1, 1916-18, WWI
German Sturmtruppen (stormtroopers) emerged during World War I as a tactical answer to the deadlock of trench warfare. Pioneered around 1915–1916, and refined under officers like Hauptmann Willy Rohr, these assault units abandoned mass frontal attacks in favor of small, mobile squads. Lightly equipped and heavily trained, they carried grenades, light machine guns, flamethrowers, and submachine guns, infiltrating enemy lines to bypass strongpoints rather than overrun them. Their "infiltration tactics" relied on speed, surprise, and short, intense artillery barrages to disorient defenders. The methods reached full expression during the 1918 Spring Offensive, where stormtroopers achieved dramatic breakthroughs. Though ultimately unable to win the war, their doctrine profoundly influenced 20th-century infantry tactics, foreshadowing the combined-arms maneuver warfare that defined later conflicts.
