The French Foreign Legion
"Honneur et Fidélité" (Honor and Fidelity). The French Foreign Legion is a unique military corps of the French Army, established in 1831 to allow foreign nationals to serve in the French military. It is renowned for its elite status and has a long history of service in French military campaigns around the world.
The Thomas Gunn recent French Foreign Legion releases have been extremely popular and we have sold out of many and we have limited numbers left of the other releases. Therefore, this month we have reinforcements and we listened and as many collectors asked for a Flag Bearer, we answered that call, along with a light MG and two Grenadiers.
Keep your eyes peeled for further releases in this range, including a further flag bearer with the Green and Red flag of the Legion and drummer.
Return to Foreign Legion
The French Foreign Legion, one of the world’s most iconic military forces. The Foreign Legion was created by King Louis Philippe, on 10 March 1831 allowing the incorporation of foreign nationals into the French Army from the foreign regiments of the Kingdom of France.
The establishment of the new regiment specified that the foreigners recruited could only serve outside France. Created to fight "outside mainland France", the Foreign Legion was stationed in Algeria. The Foreign Legion was initially divided into six "national battalions" (Swiss, Poles, Germans, Italians, Spanish, and Dutch-Belgian). Smaller national groups, such as ten Englishmen recorded in December 1832, appear to have been placed randomly.
The Legion has since grown to become one of the toughest and most respected armed forces around the world and still to this day holds a magic and allure that still entices many a young man to enlist and lose his old identity and gain a new one, so long as he can endure five years of service with them.
