Middle Guard Fusilier Grenadiers
The Middle Guard Fusilier Grenadiers were an elite regiment within Napoleon Bonaparte’s Imperial Guard during the Napoleonic Wars, forming part of the esteemed Old Guard. Created in 1806, they were composed mainly of veteran soldiers promoted from line regiments for their experience and loyalty. Distinguished by their bearskin caps and imposing presence, the Fusilier Grenadiers served as both a symbol of Imperial prestige and a formidable battlefield force. They saw action in several major campaigns, including at Wagram (1809), where they supported the French center, and during the Russian campaign of 1812, notably at Borodino, where they helped secure key positions under intense fire. They also fought at Leipzig (1813) and played a significant role in the defense of Paris (1814). During the 100 Days Campaign, they participated in the Battle of Waterloo (1815), where they were committed late in the day, but, like the rest of the Imperial Guard, were ultimately unable to turn the tide. Their discipline and resilience throughout these battles made them one of the most respected units in the Grande Armée.
