Confederate Infantrymen at Rest
Soldiers on both sides marched between dusk and dawn--rarely at night, because of risk of accident and injury. They would make breakfast before sunrise, pack up camp, set out on the march at daylight, and would continue marching throughout the day, usually fixing dinner at dark. Soldiers would march in any kind of weather: heat, cold, rain, or snow. Rarely did marching occur on good roads, as they typically marched through mud and water--it truly was A Hard Road to Travel.
