Confederate Infantry Drummer in Frock Coat Marching
Drums have been used by the military since ancient times. Easily carried on the march, they are loud enough for clear communication of orders over the din and confusion of combat. The responsibility of the Fife and Drum Corps was to communicate these directions in battle and in camp--as well as help move injured to field hospitals immediately following an engagement. A Civil War Fife and Drum Corps would include a Drum Major, Fifers, and Drummers playing both the snare drum and bass drum. Normally attached to a regiment, the size of the Fife and Drum Corps would range from as little as 7 or 8 to as many as 20 men. This infantry drummer is wearing a unique southern-made frock coat.
