Confederate in Frock Coat Marching with State of Virginia Flag
This Confederate soldier in marching order is wearing a frock coat and kepi made from domestic cloth and trousers probably of imported English cloth. He carries a Virginia state flag, first adopted in April of 1861, and readopted again in 1912. Several variations of this flag survive in numerous collections, some with additional mottos or bullion trim along one or more of the edges. In the center of this blue flag is the seal of the Commonwealth of Virginia, featuring a standing allegorical figure of virtue having vanquished tyranny, symbolized by a fallen king at her feet. She has an exposed breast in the manner of classical depictions of Amazon with the motto Sic Semper Tyrannis at the bottom, meaning, “Thus always to tyrants.”
