Confederate General George Pickett No.2
A West Point graduate who joined the Confederacy after Virginia’s secession, George Pickett will forever be known for the ill-fated charge that bears his name. Pickett accepted a commission in Confederate service and moved quickly up the ranks to brigadier general. At Fredericksburg, his men cut down the union’s courageous “Irish Brigade” as they advanced up a long, 1/4 mile slope. Now at Gettysburg, he and his men were tasked to make a similar advance only from a greater distance. Canister from Union artillery tore through his division followed by concentrated rifle volleys. All three of Pickett’s brigade commanders were killed or wounded as was a staggering number of his own men; nearly all the rest would be killed by the war’s end.
