Two Roman Auxiliary Slingers Readying to Sling

Roman Auxiliary Slingers
First off, we have available two auxiliary slingers from the Imperial era.
While the Romans increasingly used archers, slingers remained an invaluable part of the Roman army for centuries.  They had an advantage over archers:  slingers could often out-range archers, and their projectiles could have a powerful, lethal impact.  They were cost-effective:  slings were much cheaper to produce than bows and arrows, and ammunition was often readily available stones or easily-made lead or clay pellets.
During a battle, they could act as skirmishers, and they would take their position on the flanks of the legionary infantry.
While not their primary role, some legionaries could use slings, and the weapon remained a common part of the Roman army across the centuries.
We can imagine the discussions around the camp fire, on the best weight, shape, and type was the best, most lethal, projectile. Slingers made their own lead projectiles and/or searched for stones that would fit in the sling

Early slingers were recruited into the Roman army from places such as Crete and the Balearic islands.  Although not popular in Hollywood films, the slinger must have been an integral part of Roman armed formations for some time.  This is evidenced by the 180 examples of sling shot that were found near Birdoswald Roman camp in the UK.  There is speculation that these sling shots could had been used by the Romans during their invasion of Scotland in AD 140, or repelling a Pict attack on Hadrian's wall, which the fort forms part of.
Many of the sling shot had a small hole drilled in the side of them, this created a whistling effect as they sailed through the air towards the enemy; psychological warfare started earlier than many suppose!

This is a twin pack set:  you get two different Roman slingers in each box
.
