The Quebec city fortifications during the siege of 1759 were reasonably extensive. From 1745 the landward side of the city was enclosed by extensive earthworks, and stone defenses designed by Chief Engineer Chaussegros de Lery, part of which included the Saint-Louis Gate. Montcalm the French commander was mortally wounded while trying to rally his broken army, many prints of the period show him held up in his saddle by his soldiers while he entered Quebec through the Saint-Louis Gate.
