The Velites were the skirmishers. Their job was to harass the enemy main body and prevent their own main body from the enemy skirmishers. These were the youngest and poorest men, they were armed with javelins and a short sword. Protection consisted of a helmet with an animal covering and a round shield. They wore no body armor.
