Large quantities of French armour including many Renault R35 tanks were captured by the Germans in 1940 and were adapted and pressed back into service by their captors. This particular model mounts a 4.7cm anti tank gun in an open armoured turret to become a tank destroyer. Some were used during “Operation Barbarossa”–the Invasion of Russia in 1941. Others were deployed in the occupied territories on anti partisan operations. A few even saw action in Normandy in June 1944.
