Native Warrior Advancing Pointing
As fighting between British and Revolutionary forces broke out, both sides called on American Indians for support. Their knowledge of the local surroundings, keen tracking skills, and formidable fighting abilities made them consummate allies. When the first shots were fired at Lexington and Concord in 1775, members of the Stockbridge-Mohican tribe volunteered as minutemen. Throughout the war, they served as scouts, helping the Continental Army when preparing troop movements or formulating ambush attacks. The Stockbridge-Mohicans also helped by gathering intelligence and were vital to diplomatic communication by acting as ambassadors between the United States and other Native American tribes.
