British 43rd Regiment of Foot Ensign with King's Colors, 1780

On 18 July 1783, the 43rd, commanded by Maj. George Hewett, embarked at Portsmouth, Virginia for Yorktown aboard the Brig Betsy.  Beginning on 28 September, the regiment was besieged with the rest of the British Army at Yorktown, where it was stationed in “the advanced redoubt on the left” with the 33rd, 71st, and 80th of Foot, as well as two German units.  During the siege, it sustained casualties of ten killed, 18 wounded, and 12 missing.  At least one officer, Capt. Duncan Cameron, distinguished himself during the American assault on the redoubt the night of 14 October.  Five days later, Cornwallis was forced to surrender.  The strength of the regiment at the capitulation on 19 October was 12 officers and 345 rank-and- file.  Although it is recorded that they surrendered both King’s and regimental Colours, the regiment later claimed that their colours were not lost, but left at a depot in New York.  Finally on 25 November 1783, the men of the 43rd, along with other interned British soldiers, embarked for England from New York City.
