U.S. Navy Pilot, 1941-45

In World War II, naval aviation became the decisive element in the war at sea.  No longer did lumbering dreadnoughts rule the waves.  For the first time in naval history, opponents engaged out of direct sight of each other.  Now float planes and radar would be the eyes of the combatants and when the enemy was sighted, the pilots were scrambled.  Naval engagements, such as the Battle of the Coral Sea and Midway, were conducted largely or entirely by aircraft.  The U.S. Navy forever eliminated Japan’s carrier force and air power in the Battle of the Philippine Sea, (colloquially known as “The Great Marianas Turkey Shoot”) destroying nearly 600 enemy aircraft along with two fleet carriers and one light carrier.  Over the course of the war, Navy and Marine pilots alone claimed the destruction of more than 15,000 enemy aircraft and 621 Japanese merchant and warships.
